With this in mind, she would like to have as many people see it as possible and provide her with feedback. If you are available Thursday 4/12/18 after school to watch her documentary, she will be showing it in my room, 229. She, as well as I, would deeply appreciate any feedback you can give her.

Ian Kavanaugh

Ian Kavanaugh just placed first at the National History Day competition in Washington, DC in the category of documentary.  This is an amazing accomplishment for Ian who has been competing in history day competitions for the last four years.  I know Ian appreciates all the help people in our school community have given him with this endeavor.  I also want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Julia Atwood who has been an incredible mentor to Ian during this entire process.

Congratulations Ian Kavanaugh, who is advancing to the National History Day Competition in Maryland for his Individual Documentary entitled Schoolhouse Speech: Taking a Stand in Tinker v. Des Moines.  This is a huge honor for him as he will be representing our school as well as the state of Massachusetts.

On January 25, 2017, 46 entries competed at the Mansfield High School History Day Competition.   National History Day is a non-profit organization that strives to improve history education through a national competition.  It challenges students to do historical research through the lens of an annual theme and turn that research into a project which analyzes the information the students have found. Students are given the option of several different formats for their project including historical essay, performance, documentary, exhibit, and website.  Students have been working on their research-based projects throughout their Social Studies courses or through the History Club and competed against other students for the chance to advance to the regional competition as well as win awards.

Each entry was based on historical research done by the students and must relate to this year’s theme, which is Taking a Stand. These students presented their work to the judges and were asked on-the- spot interview questions about their products. Students were assessed on their historical content, relation to theme, as well as the quality of their project.
