MHS Students help elementary school students explore STEM careers at STEM Expo 2018

This year, the 2018 Envision the Future STEM Expo had four groups representing Mansfield High School:  The Student Service Corps, members of Mrs. Elofson’s Engineering class, Mr. Liska’s STEM class and the Envision the Future team.  One hundred and thirty five fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders and their parents took part in activities linked to STEM majors and careers. More than thirty presenters from the Mansfield school district and corporations from southeastern Massachusetts ran workshops and activities related to STEM topics.

Mrs. Fournier, Mrs. Shea, and Student Service Corp members helped with activity tables for students at the March 10th event.  Twenty-nine members of the volunteer group, wearing green SSC tshirts, assisted during the three and a half hour expo. Activities included investigating cell membranes using bubbles, observing density differences with lava lamps, the non-Newtonian fluid: Oobleck, hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions with magic milk  and a spaghetti marshmallow tower challenge. The Student Service members also led the young students around the presentations and workshops to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and they assisted in three workshops. Some of the 30 presenters included our Mansfield police, fire department and DPW workers as well as others from local  corporations and community businesses such as the Cambridge Science Festival and Waquoit National Estuarine Reserve on Cape Cod.

Mrs. Elofson and MHS Engineering class members Ethan Bruce, Nilay Pangrekar, Nikhil Lankipalle and Katie Healey helped present the Zipline Challenge--students design and build something to carry a Ping-Pong ball from the top of a zip line to the bottom in less than four seconds while learning about friction and balance.

Katie Healey times the descent of Gwynne Pare’s design at 1.28 seconds--our first place Zip Line winner!

Mr. Liška with help from current and former members of his high school S.T.E.A.M. class, helped students understand hands-on problem solving as well as automation via radio control cars and many other demonstrations many of which were student-constructed.

The event finished with a closing demonstration of science by the original Envision the Future team, who are now students at Mansfield High School: Ravindya Hettiarachchi, Julia Courtney, and Mairead Shannon. They demonstrated exothermic reactions using yeast and hydrogen peroxide.
